What is a knife gate valve?
A knife gate valve uses a thin, sharpened gate that slides across the flow and cuts through whatever is in it. The body is deliberately short and the seat is a soft insert rather than a machined metal pocket, so there is nowhere for solids to pack. That is what separates it from a conventional gate valve: it is built for slurry, fibre and settled solids rather than for clean liquid.
Which knife gate valves does MVS manufacture?
Two: the manually operated Knife Gate Valve and the Pneumatic Knife Gate Valve supplied as a complete actuated assembly. Both share the same body, gate and seat options, so you can standardise on one valve across manual and automated points in the same line.
Knife gate or conventional gate valve — which do I need?
Use a knife gate valve wherever the line carries slurry, pulp, fibre, powder or settled solids — its sharpened gate shears through the media and the seat has no pocket to clog. Use a conventional gate valve for clean liquid and gas at higher pressure, where the solid wedge and machined metal seat give a tighter, longer-lasting shut-off. A knife gate is not a high-pressure valve.
What sizes and end connections are available?
DN 50 to DN 600 as standard, with larger sizes on request. End connections are wafer, lugged and flanged. Wafer is the lightest and cheapest and suits a line that can be sprung apart; lugged lets you remove downstream pipework without draining the line; flanged is used where the valve must carry pipe loads.
Which body and seat materials do you offer?
Bodies in EN 1.4408 stainless steel and EN 5.3105 ductile iron as standard, with EN 1.4470 duplex, Titanium B265 and Hastelloy available for aggressive duty. Seat inserts in PTFE, NBR, EPDM and polyurethane, plus FDA-grade PTFE and EC 1935/2004 compliant options for food contact, and a stainless metal seat where temperature or abrasion rules out an elastomer.
Which industries and media use knife gate valves?
Pulp and paper stock lines, mining and mineral processing slurries, cement and fly ash, sugar and starch, wastewater and sludge, power station ash handling, and food processing where the FDA-compliant seat is specified. Anywhere the media would pack into a conventional valve seat, a knife gate is the normal answer.
Are knife gate valves unidirectional or bidirectional?
The standard resilient-seated design is unidirectional — it seals against flow in one direction, and the body carries an arrow showing which. Fitting one backwards is a common and expensive mistake, because it will pass media past the gate. Bidirectional designs are available where the line can reverse; state the requirement at enquiry so the correct body and seat are supplied.
How is the pneumatic version actuated?
The pneumatic knife gate valve uses a double-acting or spring-return cylinder mounted on the yoke, supplied complete with the mounting kit and, where specified, solenoid valve, limit switches and speed controls. Cylinder size is selected for the line pressure and media so the gate has enough thrust to shear through the solids, not just to move freely in clean water.
What maintenance does a knife gate valve need?
Very little in service, but two things wear: the seat insert and the gland packing. Both are replaceable in the field without removing the body from the line on lugged and flanged designs. Keep the exposed gate clean, since dried slurry carried back through the packing is what scores the gate and starts a gland leak.
