What is a plug valve?
A plug valve is a quarter-turn valve that uses a tapered or cylindrical plug with a port through it. A 90° turn lines the port up with the pipe or turns it across the flow. Because the plug seals over a large contact area rather than on a narrow seat ring, it holds up well in dirty and frequently cycled service where a ball valve seat would score.
Which plug valves does MVS manufacture?
Two: the Lubricated Plug Valve, which uses injected sealant between plug and body, and the PTFE Sleeved Plug Valve, which uses a replaceable PTFE sleeve instead and needs no lubrication. A fully lined version is available as the PTFE Lined Plug Valve.
Lubricated or sleeved — which should I specify?
A lubricated plug valve suits higher pressure, larger sizes and dirty hydrocarbon service, and the sealant can be topped up in the line to restore a seal — but it must be maintained on schedule and the sealant has to be compatible with the media. A sleeved valve needs no lubrication at all, keeps torque low and stable, and is the right choice for chemical service and anywhere maintenance access is poor.
Plug valve or ball valve — what is the difference?
Both are quarter-turn. A ball valve has lower operating torque and a full round bore, which makes it the better general-purpose choice for clean on/off duty. A plug valve seals over a much larger area, tolerates particulate and frequent cycling better, and holds its seal as the sleeve or sealant wears. For clean service choose a ball valve; for dirty or high-cycle service choose a plug valve.
What sizes and pressure classes are available?
Lubricated plug valves are supplied 15 mm to 300 mm with flanged ends at Class 150. Sleeved plug valves run ½″ to 16″ (15–400 mm) at Class 150# and 300#. End connections include flanges to BS 10 Table D and F, ANSI/ASME B16.10 Class 125, DIN 2532 PN 10/16 and BS 4504 PN 10, with screwed, threaded and socket-weld ends available on the sleeved design.
Which standards do your plug valves follow?
Lubricated plug valves are designed to BS 5158, API 6D, ISO 14313, API 599 and BS 5353, and tested to EN 12266-1 / BS 6755-1. Sleeved plug valves are tested to API 598. MVS is ISO 9001:2015 certified and test certificates are issued with every order.
Which body materials do you supply?
Lubricated plug valves in Cast Iron, Cast Steel (ASTM A216 Gr. WCB), SS 304 (CF8) and SS 316 (CF8M) for body, cover and gland. Sleeved plug valves additionally in Gmonite, Nickel, Inconel, Hastelloy, Monel, Super Duplex and alloy steels for severe chemical duty.
Which media and industries are plug valves used for?
Chemical and petrochemical processing, chlorine and chlor-alkali, sulphur and tar handling, refinery product lines, gas distribution, pulp and paper liquor, and any transfer line carrying media with entrained solids. Sleeved designs are particularly common in chlorine service, where sealant compatibility rules out a lubricated valve.
How are plug valves operated and can they be actuated?
Smaller valves use a wrench or lever; larger sizes use a worm gearbox to keep the operating effort reasonable, since plug valve torque is higher than a ball valve of the same size. Pneumatic and electric actuated assemblies are available on the sleeved design in manual, worm-gear, pneumatic and electric operating modes.
