What is a 3 way ball valve and how does it work?
A 3 way ball valve has three ports and a ball drilled with an L or T shaped passage. Rotating the ball diverts flow from one outlet to another, mixes two inlets, or shuts the line off — replacing two or three separate two-way valves and the pipework between them. One quarter-turn actuator then operates the whole arrangement instead of several.
L port or T port — which should I specify?
An L port connects the inlet to one of two outlets, so it diverts: A to B, or A to C, and in some positions shuts off entirely. A T port connects all three ports or any two of them, so it can also mix two streams or feed both outlets at once. Choose L port for straightforward diverting between two destinations, T port where you need mixing or a both-ways position. State which you need at enquiry, because the ball is machined differently.
What size, pressure class and standards apply?
1″ (DN 25) to 6″ (DN 150) at Class 150# / 300#, with flanged ends to ASME B16.5 and face-to-face per ASME B16.10 or manufacturer standard. Designed to BS EN ISO 17292 / ASME B16.34 and inspected and tested to BS EN ISO 12266-1 / BS 6755-1. Body in ASTM A216 WCB, A351 CF8 or CF8M, duplex or exotic alloys; seats in PTFE, CFT, GFT or PEEK; gland packing PTFE or graphite.
How does a 3 way valve compare with using two separate valves?
One 3 way valve replaces two two-way valves plus the tee and the spool between them — fewer joints to leak, less space, less weight and one actuator instead of two. The trade-off is that a single failure takes out both flow paths, and the ball has a more complex passage that is harder to clean. For simple diverting duty the 3 way valve almost always wins on cost and footprint.
Are you a manufacturer, and what are your minimum order quantity and customization options?
MVS manufactures at its own works — since 1978, ISO 9001:2015 certified — and exports across several continents. The minimum order quantity is 20 pieces. L and T port configurations, exotic alloy bodies, and manual, pneumatic or electric actuated assemblies are built to order.
