What is a three piece ball valve and how does it work?
The body is made in three parts: two end caps that bolt to the pipework and a removable centre section holding the ball and seats. A quarter turn of the handle opens or closes the bore. Because the centre lifts out while the end caps stay flanged or welded in place, seats and seals can be replaced in situ without cutting the valve out or disturbing pipe alignment — which is the whole point of the design.
Which body, ball and seat materials are available?
Body in carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex steel or exotic alloys. Ball and stem in stainless steel. Seats and seals in PTFE and reinforced PTFE for leak-tight sealing, with PTFE and graphite gaskets. Handle in carbon steel with a PVC grip. Specify reinforced PTFE where the duty cycles frequently or the temperature runs toward the top of the range.
What size, pressure class and temperature range apply?
½″ to 12″ with flanged ends, in Class 150#, 300#, 600#, 900# and 1500# — a considerably wider pressure range than the one and two piece designs. Operating temperature is −20 °C to 200 °C, suitable for most industrial fluids. Operation is manual, pneumatic or electric.
When is a three piece valve worth the extra cost over a two piece?
Whenever taking the line out of service is expensive, or the media wears seats quickly — slurries, sticky process fluids, steam and high-cycle automated points. A seat change on a three piece valve is a bolt-off, drop-in job; on a two piece valve it usually means removing the valve entirely. It also carries higher pressure classes, so it may be the only option above Class 300.
