What is a lubricated plug valve and how does it work?
A quarter-turn valve with a tapered plug seated in the body, sealed by a sealant injected through a fitting in the stem. The sealant fills the clearance between plug and body, forming the seal and lubricating the turn. Because the seal can be renewed by injecting more sealant without taking the valve out of the line, it holds up well in dirty hydrocarbon service and at pressures where an unlubricated plug would be very hard to turn.
Which body and trim materials are available?
Body, cover and gland in Cast Iron, Cast Steel (ASTM A216 Gr. WCB), SS 304 (CF8) or SS 316 (CF8M). The sealant must be compatible with the process fluid — that compatibility, not the body material, is usually the deciding factor, so tell us the media when you enquire.
What size, pressure class, end connections and standards apply?
15 mm to 300 mm with flanged ends at Class 150. Flanges to BS 10 Table D and F, ANSI/ASME B16.10 Class 125, DIN 2532 PN 10/16 or BS 4504 PN 10. Designed to BS 5158, API 6D, ISO 14313, API 599 and BS 5353, and tested to EN 12266-1 / BS 6755-1. MVS is ISO 9001:2015 certified.
Lubricated or sleeved — which should I choose?
A lubricated valve suits higher pressure, larger sizes and dirty hydrocarbon service, and its seal can be restored in the line — but it must be re-lubricated on schedule and the sealant has to suit the media. A PTFE sleeved plug valve needs no lubrication at all, keeps torque low and stable, and is the right choice for chemical service and wherever maintenance access is poor. In chlorine service sealant compatibility usually rules the lubricated design out.
