What is a PTFE sleeved plug valve and how does it work?
A quarter-turn plug valve in which a replaceable PTFE sleeve sits between the tapered plug and the body, doing the sealing instead of injected sealant. The plug turns against PTFE rather than metal, so torque stays low and constant and there is nothing to re-lubricate. The sleeve is retained by a 360° metal edge, and the design has no body cavity — so there is nowhere for media to collect, and the turning action is self-cleaning.
Which body, plug and sleeve materials are available?
Body, bonnet and plug in carbon steel, stainless steel, Gmonite, Nickel, Inconel, Hastelloy, Monel, super duplex or alloy steel. Sleeve in PTFE, glass-filled PTFE, carbon PTFE, graphite PTFE, RBC 006 or TFM. Stem packing PTFE or graphite; seals and diaphragms in PTFE, PTFE/graphite blends or flexible metal/PTFE; fasteners stainless (A4-70). The sleeve compound is selected for the media and temperature, so state both.
What size, pressure class, temperature and standards apply?
½″ to 16″ (15–400 mm) at Class 150# and 300#, over a temperature range of −29 °C to +180 °C. Built to API 6D and API 599, with face-to-face per ASME B16.10 and flanges per ASME B16.5, and tested to API 598. Flow is bidirectional. End connections flanged (ASME B16.5 / DIN), screwed or threaded, with socket-weld optional. Operation manual by lever or handwheel, worm-gear, pneumatic or electric.
Why is a sleeved plug valve preferred in chlorine and aggressive chemical service?
Because there is no sealant to be attacked or washed away, no body cavity where media can collect and concentrate, and the only wetted non-metallic is PTFE, which resists almost everything. Torque also stays constant instead of rising as sealant dries out, so an actuator sized on day one is still correctly sized years later. Where a lubricated plug valve would need a compatible sealant and a maintenance routine, the sleeved design needs neither.
