What is a rubber lined diaphragm valve and how does it work?
A weir type diaphragm valve in which the cast body is lined with rubber and a flexible diaphragm is pressed down onto a raised weir by the compressor to close the line. The diaphragm and lining together seal the process off completely from the stem, bonnet and handwheel, so there is no gland packing to leak and no metal in contact with the media. The weir shortens diaphragm travel, which gives longer diaphragm life and better throttling control.
Which body materials, linings and diaphragms are available?
Body in Cast Iron (IS 210 Gr. FG 200/220/260), Cast Carbon Steel (ASTM A216 Gr. WCB) or Stainless Steel SS 304. Body lining in Ebonite, Natural rubber, Neoprene, Hypalon, Butyl or EPDM for general and abrasive duty, or FEP, PFA and PVDF where chemical attack is severe. Diaphragms in matching elastomers and PTFE-faced construction. The lining and diaphragm should be selected together for the media and temperature.
What size, end connections and standards apply?
15 mm to 300 mm. Designed to BS EN 13397:2002 (formerly BS 5156) and tested to BS EN 12266-1 (BS 6755 Part 1). End connections flanged to BS 10, DIN PN10/16 or ANSI B16.5, with butt weld available. MVS is ISO 9001:2015 certified and supplies test certificates with each order.
Weir type or straight through — which do I need?
This weir type has a raised sill, so the diaphragm flexes less and lasts longer, throttles better and seals more tightly — the right choice for most clean and moderately loaded duty. A straight through diaphragm valve has a full unobstructed bore that drains completely and passes slurry, fibre and solids without a ledge to build on, at the cost of more diaphragm travel and shorter diaphragm life. Choose weir unless solids or full drainage force the other.
