What is a forged steel gate valve and how does it work?
A small-bore OS&Y rising-stem gate valve whose body is forged rather than cast. The handwheel raises and lowers a wedge across the bore, and the outside screw keeps the stem thread clear of the media. Forging aligns the grain structure and removes the porosity a small casting can carry, so the same wall thickness holds far higher pressure — which is why forged bodies dominate small-bore high-pressure isolation.
Which body, wedge and seat materials are available?
Body and bonnet in forged ASTM A105 or A105N carbon steel, F304L or F316L stainless, or F11, F22 and F91 alloy steels for elevated temperature service. Seats metal-to-metal, with Stellite hard-facing available where the duty is erosive or the differential high. Specify alloy steel bodies for steam and high-temperature lines where carbon steel would be marginal.
What size, pressure class and end connections apply?
½″ to 2″ (DN 15 – DN 50) in Class 800 to 1500 per API/ASME. End connections threaded, socket-weld, threaded × socket welding, or flanged — the range of connections is deliberately wide because small-bore high-pressure lines are built every way. MVS is ISO 9001:2015 certified.
Forged or cast gate valve — which do I need?
Line size and class decide it. Below 2″ at Class 800 and above, forged is the only sensible construction; a cast body would need far more metal to reach the rating and small castings are harder to keep sound at high pressure. Above 2″, forging becomes uneconomic and the cast stainless gate valve covers ½″–24″ at Class 150–600.
